Why is important

The data collected from subjects will be used to train and validate RNN/LSTM and BNN neural networks that will be implemented in a fall detection device worn by elderly Hispanics/Latinos who are at risk of falls and who will participate in a future evidence-based falls prevention program.

Subjects have the potential to benefit from this research should they someday require the use of a fall detection device. Elderly Hispanics/Latinos at risk of falls will benefit from this research through the development of a fall detection device that becomes tuned to the individual dynamics of the wearer. The fall detection device developed through this research will provide a mechanism to assess the frequency of falls among older Hispanic adults, assess level of physical activity and skill, such as walking and balance, and identify older Hispanics who may benefit from participating in evidence-based fall prevention program. These benefits will yield a broader impact on society by reducing the disparity between the frequency of falling between elderly Hispanics/Latinos and non-Hispanics/Latinos.
